Understanding
In these days we have been traced in many ways the mystery of the Incarnation and around the crib, in that place where we met several people with God himself made man for us, Joseph, Mary, shepherds, wise men, and others pointed out that the liturgy in this period : Stephen, John, Thomas, innocent children ...
Now, early next year, all humanity is called next to a mother in which everything is summed up and finds fulfillment and explanation, a mother who gathers us in the womb of His mercy and brings us close to the Word of God made man in her, a mother who was proclaimed "Mother of God," Theotokos "from the third Council of Ephesus.
The word "maternity" basically means that, through you, Jesus Christ the Son of God became flesh. And if the Son of God became flesh, and when that Son of God is the peace that God expresses to us, is through you that peace of God came into this world. What the Church is called to do now is to continue the work of Mary: to ensure that this peace will not be extinguished, is not lost on the path of time, but continues to be generated and regenerated in human life, year by year, day by day.
To make this journey, our days on earth, as the eternal day, are illuminated by two names: the name of the Lord Jesus, beyond which there can be no no other name in this world nor in the future, and the name of his Virgin Mother, Mary the memory of our true identity, and established as the reference model and to give hope and meaning to the days of the new year begins.
Meditation
v. 16: They went, without delay, and found Mary and Joseph and the Babe lying in the manger. The verse refers to the shepherds. These we find them on the road and as usual, Luke describes them in a hurry, like the rush of Mary in going to visit her kinswoman Elizabeth.
"Go " ... a word that refers to a crossing. Must bridge the gaps ... we need to go to Bethlehem. There is an ad received, but there is a need for eye! The journey of the shepherds ... our journey of life, with the rush of our everyday life of Mary ... the courage to travel even if it's night, even if you do not know the route, even if you do not know the goal, even if there is fatigue, tiredness, sleep, doubt, fear ... It is the journey within ourselves: a tiring journey. What they found
the shepherds to Bethlehem? Simple people: Mary, Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. The emphasis of this sign given by the angels, and his feedback from pastors want to be a element that highlights even more the human aspect of him who is the Son of God
Pastors are models of faith. The shepherds make their own expectation of the poor, those poor Javhè of Scripture. This is a good news expected, given to the poor in a stable, given to people familiar with these things, with the stables, feeding troughs.
This encounter with the Word of life, is emphasized by the verbs classics "found ... they saw."
v. 17: And after seeing him, told what the child had been told. The shepherds see the reality of what the Lord has made known to them. And it is so important that they can not stay by making it known to others. Become messengers and apostles. What we see
the missionary life of the Church: the ad leads to listen, listen to the vision. This in turn leads to others who have seen the announcement that by listening to come to the view.
The content of their proclamation is that the child had been told. On the lips of the shepherds is proof that God makes of His Son. It is the mystery of a poverty that must be resolved, but not heard, a poverty that bears witness to a poor Christ.
v. 18: All those who heard it wondered at those things from their pastors. is the wonder, surprise that the Gospel can not but arouse. The child's parents are there who love the mystery of living in silence and wonder.
Even in the silence of the shepherds wonder there is a wonder that you share life, because God has kindled in our hearts the flame of his love!
The pastors do not realize that what they were made custodians had created astonishment in others. They are the witness of faith and learn to praise God, that cause others to wonder, wonder ... and helping others learn to praise God for the wonders he has done.
v. 19: Mary, for its part, kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Some translate these words. The heart of Mary, seat of words recalled in depth in the Spirit, is therefore a heart of wisdom similar to that of the scribe who knows how to draw from his treasure things old and things and make new ones, is the anticipation and shape of the heart of the sons of wisdom ( Lk 7.35), the church of listening welcomed, preserved, meditated and prayed to hasten the time when the light is not made transparent. Luke emphasizes meditation on the facts of Mary whose meaning is revealed only in the revelation of Easter.
Mary, that is, it's all collected and concentrated in itself to penetrate deeper into the meaning of events in which found itself involved. Compares them with each other and with the communication pastors have done on the Child. Mary appears as the woman who is mother and knows how to interpret the events of the Son.
Maria thus becomes a symbol and model of the Christian community, discerning and contemplative attitude in trying to assimilate internally the inexhaustible mystery of the Incarnate Word.
v. 20: The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as they were told. Listening to the Word is God's gift The shepherds glorified God for what they have heard. That's the power of the word humility, strength and humility of the poor.
"See" and "hear" are verbs of faith. Quite the combination, and akùein idèin, which often occurs in the Acts of the Apostles, configure the shepherds as the first witnesses, the apostles.
We observe that the Christian experience, in this passage is expressed by a few verbs that work together: to listen, obey, find, view, witness, praise. It 'important to check whether and how to conjugate them in our lives, whether and to what extent we proclaim the joy of having met the Savior.
v. 21: When eight days were completed for the circumcision, he was given the name Jesus, as he had given him before he was conceived in the womb. The Gospel continues referring to the rite of circumcision (by which the child is officially entered into the People of God) and the imposition of the name, to which Luke gives a special prominence: it is God who chose this name, and then the mission that it expresses. The name in the Bible says the identity and mission of the wearer. Jesus, in fact, in Hebrew reads: Yehôsua 'and means YHWH saves (the first letters of the name to our Jewish brothers and sisters so we never say with deep respect, we say: "God saves".
This attention from the 'evangelist is an indication that the name is imposed on the unmentionable name, origin of each name. Now we can name God because was given to us. The name of God for man can not be that Jesus, meaning "God saves." God is for us, lost and far away from him, because he calls Jesus, God with us and Savior.
The Gospel in the mind of the Church Fathers
If one does not believe that Mary, the holy mother of God, is out of divinity. (Gregory of Nazianzus, Epist., 101)
The Word of God, as the Apostle says, "the seed of Abraham cares. So had to make very similar to the brethren "(Heb 2, 16. 17) and take a body similar to ours. This is why Mary had its existence in the world because of her Christ and offered to take this body, as his, for us.
So when the Scripture speaks of the birth of Christ says: "She wrapped him in swaddling clothes" (Lk 2, 7). For this was said blessed are the breasts that nursed. When the mother gave birth to the Savior, he was offered in sacrifice.
Gabriel gave to Mary the news with caution and discretion. But he said not simply "one who will be born in you," why do not you think a foreign body in her, but "you" (cf. Lk 1, 35), because he knew that he gave to the world that she had originated from her. The Word made itself what was ours, came up as a sacrifice and destroyed him with death. Then overlaid us of his condition, as the Apostle says: "We need this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality" (cf. 1 Cor 15, 53). However, this is not a myth, as some are saying. Far be it from us, such a thought. Our Saviour was indeed a man and what was the salvation of all mankind. In no way our salvation can be said fictitious. He saved the whole man, body and soul. Salvation has been made of the same Word. Truly human nature was born of Mary, according to the Scriptures, and real, that is human, was the body of the Lord's true, because quite identical to ours, because Maria is our sister, since we all originated in Adam. What we read in John, "the Word became flesh" (Jn 1, 14), still has this meaning, as it is interpreted as other similar words. Is written in Paul: "Christ became a curse for us" (cf. Gal 3, 13). The man in this intimate union of the Word received an enormous wealth: the condition of death became immortal when he was tied to the physical life, became a partner in the Spirit, even if made of earth, has entered the kingdom of heaven. Although the word has taken a mortal body from Mary, the Trinity itself has remained in what was, without a sort of additions or subtractions. E 'remained absolute perfection: Trinity and only deity. And so the Church proclaims in one God the Father and the Word (Athanasius, "Letters" For Epitetto 5-9). Today's Word
appeared covered with flesh, the kind that had never been visible to human eyes, even began to be palpable. Today, pastors learned from the words of the angels that the Savior has been generated in the nature of flesh and soul. Today, the shepherds of the flock of the Lord was given the model of evangelization, so that we, together with the multitude of the heavenly army, hail, Glory to God in the highest heavens and on earth peace among men with whom he (Leo the Great, Sermon VI for Christmas ).
A miracle is your mother! The Lord went into it and became a servant. He went into it that he is the same eloquence and she became silent. He entered the thunder and she forced her voice to silence. He entered the shepherd of all and she became a lamb. Bleating came out in the light of day. The breast of your mother overturned the order of things. The Creator of all things went in and came out rich beggar went in and came out humble exalted. We came in splendor and came out covered with a sprezzabile color. (...) We feed all who came and learned to be hungry. There came one who quenches all thirst to have learned. One who dresses all came out naked and without clothes (Ephrem the Syrian, Hymns on the Nativity , 11).
Some questions for personal reflection and comparison
Although we went without delay to the cave to contemplate with faith the saving event?
Which ad is now able to set out, to stir?
Like Mary, we are able to internalize the Word of God does not live passively?
Praying
Raccogliamoci quietly retracing our prayers and respond to the Lord in his own words (from Psalm 66):
God have mercy on us and bless us,
face shine upon us his face;
because you know your way on earth,
among all nations your salvation.
nations rejoice and be glad, because
rule the peoples justly,
the nations on earth.
Let the peoples praise God, all the peoples praise you.
God bless us,
fear and all the ends of the earth.
contemplative act
Let us contemplate the crib to see if it has something to say. To know, like the shepherds, we must go to the cave and try to see if there is something new, listen to what God tells us repeat often and live this Word: Maria, for his part, kept all these things and pondered in his heart.
